Jim Palombaro, M.D. is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician who joined Wake Emergency Physicians P. A. (WEPPA), in 1998. WEPPA is an independent democratic Emergency Medicine (EM) group located in Raleigh, NC. In 2000, Dr. Palombaro became the President of the group. Initially, there were 28 physicians staffing two Emergency Departments (ED). Over the past 14 years, WEPPA has expanded to 90 physicians with an additional 50 midlevel providers who staff 9 EDs, andtreated over 250,000 patients in the past year.
From 2000 to 2007, Dr. Palombaro has also been the Chair and Medical Director of WakeMed Health and Hospitals ED located on the Raleigh Campus. WakeMed Raleigh Campus is a 680 bed hospital, a Level One Trauma Center, Chest Pain and Stroke Center and also has two Emergency Departments, an Adult and Children’s ED with a total annual volume of 120,000 patient visits per year.
As the Medical Director, Dr. Palombaro oversaw the opening of the first free standing ED in NC in 2005, which is located at WakeMed North. Since 2005, 4 other Free Standing EDs have opened under the leadership of Dr. Palombaro.
While at WakeMed he has served on multiple hospital based committees and served in many different roles to include: Assistant Chief Medical Information Officer, Member of the Medical Executive Committee since 2000, Bylaws Committee, Stroke Task Force, Medical Staff Quality Improvement and Quality Council, Physicians Behavioral Committee, and most recently was the President of the Medical Staff of over 1000 physicians from 2011-12.
Dr. Palombaro graduated from Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY in 1989. He served in the US Navy as a Flight Surgeon from 1990-93, receiving a Navy Commendation Medal and Achievement Award for his work with Carrier AirWing Six. He then completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA in 1996. He ended his nine-year Navy tour in 1998.
